Commercials

May 27, 2010
A Curious Thought

Have you ever been watching a gripping thriller on TV when at the very peak of the stress, it cuts to comercials.  Of course this is frustrating and annoying, but you out of pure anger stare at the screen throughout the durration of the filler programming.  If youre anything like me, you soon begin over-analyzing every seccond of the commercials.  From a Chevy clip enticing potential customers to buy the latest vehicle to some strong hammer sweaty lawyer guy telling people they can sue for a fortune if they’ve been anywhere near asbestos in the last twenty-five years to a GE commertial pledging their allegence to creativity and persistence and other extremely general things with no real specificity, all comercials last around 15 seconds long.  After the GE commercial, something strange happend.  A one second clip appeared of clean cut people sitting around a table.  It seemed to be the begining of a real commercial, but its life was cut short before it even began.

I am really confused by these random akward moments in commercials that seem to be only mistakes.  The time in between regular programming is extremely expensive.  Do the TV people just waste those moments of would-be income?  I do not understand.

Largest oil leak in history

May 5, 2010
Massive Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico

On April 20th, disaster struck in the gulf of Mexico. A massive oil rig exploded killing an estimated eleven workers and ripping a hole in the bottom of the ocean spilling somewhere between two thousand and five thousand barrels of oil a day. This is a terrifying thought for environmentalists or anyone who deals with petroleum on a regular basis, or eats fish. The spilling oil destroys animal habitats and erases some of our food sources. It is extremely difficult to contain and clean up and spreads very quickly. The vast oil slick on top of the ocean is already reaching land threatening to wreak even more havoc than it already has in the ocean.

You may ask that common question proposed so often in schools, “how does this concern me?” Have you ever been around petroleum? Yes, I guarantee you have. Cars, heating systems and plastics all deal with petroleum. Prices for petroleum items will rise because of the drop in production enforced by government officials. The same will go for food. Of course demand is always high for food. The price will have to rise when the quantity falls. Yes this oil spill does concern you.

The economic issues are not the only problem introduced by this oil spill. Ethical issues are uncovered as well. Naturally people must assign blame for this ethical problem. Destruction of animals and their habitat as well as inconveniencing our own fellow man is grounds for a scapegoat. When the oil rig caught on fire and exploded, it defied all odds. Strict protocols and standards across all oil rigs are in place to prevent exactly a disaster such as this. When the catastrophic fire occurred, details are fuzzy. Nobody is really sure what happened. Never-the-less, the U.S. Government is working hard to prosecute BP, the company that ran the oil rig. The explosion is a freak incident, despite the fact that millions of barrels of oil pass through the rig annually.

This massive spill is an international disaster. You now understand the big oil spill and that it does affect you.

Real Warfare

April 18, 2010
US Nukes

America has enjoyed a sort of umbrella of protection from any enemies as a result of its complete nuclear dominance over the rest of the world. Ever since the US flexed its military muscles on August 6th and 9th of 1945, the world has feared another strike. Ever since that moment, all of the US allies have breathed easier because they too are under the umbrella. Enemies have known that America is a sleeping giant and have dared not awaken it. Until now.

President Obama ordered some severe downsizing of America’s nuclear weapons. The reforms he ordered have decreased our readiness and emboldened our enemies. His reforms make America less able to respond if another country decides to take a shot at us.

The question I ask is one many probably have. Why on earth would anybody, especially a country as hated as America, make itself less ready to respond to attack? It just makes no sense. The US is at war presently with an enemy that is not afraid to use nuclear devices. Countries such as Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan have nuclear devices under their command. What is up with our president decreasing our readiness during war times?

I vehemently disagree with this change and would like our spotlight loving president to look around him. A poll revealed that 97% of Americans disagree with Obama’s new policy. I really dislike polls and see most of them as inaccurate, but I actually trust this one. American people should have concern for their safety.

The only good thing I can pull out of this is that the ridiculous reforms do not affect our Ohio class missile carrying submarines. They still cruise around the world silently undetected. Within these wonderful submarines lies enough nuclear power to obliterate every capitol city in the world plus some. Nothing like talk of nuclear devices to help you sleep at night.

Iceland-volcanic ash

April 17, 2010
Icelandic Volcano

A few days ago, a volcano in Iceland erupted throwing a massive stack of ash high into the sky. Incredible footage was taken of the surprising volcano. This ash high in the sky poses a unique problem for transportation from North America to Europe. The opaque ash is extremely destructive to airline engines and blocks vision for pilots attempting to fly through it. For this reason, all flights that require a path through the ash have been grounded for four days now. Passengers are quite frustrated at this delay; one remarked “Of all the things I expected to go wrong with my flight, volcano ash over Iceland wasn’t one of them.” You may ask like some of them and I ask, why don’t they just fly around the stuff? The reason is the area the ash covers. It is much like when an octopus releases its ink. It disperses in a dense dark fog expanding all the time allowing the octopus to escape. Imagine that times a few million and you have this volcano. The cloud is expanding all the time making it harder to go around all the time. Airline companies are losing somewhere around 200 million dollars a day and very unhappy with the delays as they were just beginning to bounce back from a big fall in revenue. I wish the airlines good luck in the following months and years.

Lyrid Shower

April 16, 2010
Space Invaders

No, not the popular arcade shooting game or a dumb drivers ed term for a tailgater. I’m talking about the meteor that streaked through the center of the U.S. Today. Thousands reported seeing a green glow streak across the night sky followed by a huge explosion. This was caused by a golf ball sized meteor falling victim to the earth’s gravity as a part of the April meteor shower Lyrids. The Lyrids are an extremely predictable shower following the comet Thatcher (last seen 1861 and unfortunately not expected until 2276 right around my 283rd birthday, so I better get into a cryo freeze now). An abundance of 911 calls featured scared voices debating with themselves over what they were seeing. Some feared the earth would be hit by a large asteroid, while others made that leap for fearing ailean invasion. Oh those naive observers. As a bit of a fan of astronomy, I watch for any significant falls or movements of space rock. If I spot another out there, I’ll be sure to let y’all know about it.
